Project Name and Description

Town of Penetanguishene Library, Watt Not, Waste Not: Energy Meter Lending Program

An energy meter can help measure and track the amount of electricity consumed by various appliances and electronic devices in your home. The Penetanguishene Library offers five (5) power monitors and two (2) watt readers, which can be signed out free of charge for individuals with a Town library card. The power monitors and the watt readers were provided by Powerstream (https://www.powerstream.ca/), which supported the library in offering this eco-service.

The meter measures how much electricity is used by household appliances and other electronic devices by simply plugging in the portable meter and appliance or electronic device and seeing which draws the most power. Users can see how much energy and money they can save by turning off appliances or electronic devices that are not being used.

The library also offers a selection of Earth Day programs, and sources and provides a variety of ‘eco-conscious’ books. To learn more about the programs or available materials, please contact the library at 705.539.7164.

Project Goal

Measuring electricity consumption can provide residents with the information to encourage changes that will help save energy and money, and fight climate change. By using household appliances responsibly, residents can easily reduce their carbon footprint and achieve a more sustainable community.

Financial Considerations

What was the cost of the project? How was the project funded? Internally or externally? If externally, where was the support acquired (i.e., grant program, community donations, multiple methods)?

Due to the partnership with Powerstream and the provision of the units, no cost was accrued by the Town or the library to initiate this education program.

Measures of Success

How has the project helped the municipality or department achieve its sustainability goals? What specific metrics can you share about the impact it has had?

The Town of Penetanguishene's 2014-2017 Strategic Plan refers to their commitment to the Severn Sound Sustainability Plan, and to the reduction in use of natural resources through education and information. This goal is contributed to by the following Town Plan strategies:

  • Promote environmental integrity & protection, community well-being and economic prosperity through participation in Sustainable Severn Sound, and
  • Foster leisure reading, viewing and listening, lifelong learning, while striving to keep abreast of all new technologies that will support these goals.

Project Impact (Summary)

Why should other municipalities adopt/implement a similar practice?

The program has been active for over five (5) years, and although the sign-outs of the units tend to be variable (ebbs and flows), it is a valuable tool which allows users to better understand their electricity use – and to potentially take steps to reduce that use.

Providing residents with an easy way to contribute to the fight against climate change is important in ensuring they feel empowered and able to contribute to a more sustainable community.
